John Hawthorne Obituary

John MacDiarmid HAWTHORNE
December 4, 1947 – April 22, 2025

John has officially “checked out”.

With much sadness we announce the death of the greatest neighbor, most beloved teacher, and a special friend known by all for his kindness to others.  John was a true gentleman with a strong appreciation for tradition, civility, and connecting with the people in his every-day life.

John leaves behind his loving wife Wendy, sister Cathy Deans (Dennis), and many amazing family, chosen family, great friends, and his cats. He is predeceased by his parents, Catherine and Robert Hawthorne, and brother Jim Hawthorne.

John taught for 35 years in Vancouver where his positive impact on his students is immeasurable. He was proud to serve with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada and with the Commonwealth Lodge in Vancouver and was a member of the Kitsilano Boys Band, the Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club, and the ALANO Club of Vancouver.

Anyone who knew John, knew he never lost his boyish enthusiasm or humour. He was welcoming and kind-hearted and always had a great story to tell. John loved his toys, whether it was his vast collection of toy soldiers and fridge magnets, or his dump truck, series of motorcycles, and high-end British cars.

A Remembrance Gathering will be held at the Seaforth Armoury, 1650 Burrard Street, Vancouver on Saturday, November 15th 2025 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.  Parking is available at the DND Parkade at 1st Ave and Pine St. In keeping with John’s playful spirit, dress is casual and shorts are welcome.  We invite you to pay your respects, share some stories and raise your parting glass to John.

“What we have done for ourselves alone, dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.” (Brother Albert Pike)

In lieu of flowers…be generous to others in memory of John.
