Our Papa Maeng (Ismael Manuel Valdez)
In loving memory of a man who perceived the world with a brilliant mind and a kind heart.
Professionally an engineer, Papa spent much of his career building strong foundations, solving equations, and deeply understanding how things worked. Yet of all the things he built in his lifetime, his greatest blueprint and most enduring legacy was the life and family he built with love.
More than anything, Papa dreamed of having a complete, loving, and united family. One of the stories he often shared with us was about a walis tingting. He would explain that a single stick could easily be broken, but when many sticks were bound together, they became strong and difficult to break. Of all the stories and lessons he shared throughout his life, this simple story left one of the deepest and most lasting impressions on our family. It became a reminder that when we stand together, support one another, and remain united, we become stronger than any hardship we may face.
That was the kind of family Papa wanted for us—a family held together by love, understanding, peace, and unity.
He was a loving and gentle father who valued peace and carried within him a love that seemed limitless and unconditional. He was never overly expressive or showy with his emotions, but we never had to question how deeply he loved us. His love was seen in his actions, in his sacrifices, in the quiet ways he looked after us, and in everything he did to give his family a comfortable and happy life.
Especially for us, his daughters, there seemed to be nothing he would not do. He worked, sacrificed, worried, provided, guided, and protected—not because he wanted recognition, but simply because that was how Papa loved.
He possessed a remarkable intelligence and a generosity that came naturally to him. He was always ready to offer thoughtful guidance, quiet strength, and answers to life's many difficult questions. He did not simply teach us how to build a life; through the way he lived, he showed us how to live one—with integrity, kindness, humility, purpose, and love.
Though Papa is no longer physically with us, the foundations he laid remain strong beneath our feet. His wisdom will continue to guide us. His lessons will live through us. His love will remain in the way we care for one another, and the story of the walis tingting will continue to remind us to stay close, to remain united, and to never allow life's difficulties to break the family he worked so hard to build.
We will miss his presence, his guidance, his quiet ways, and the comfort of simply knowing that Papa was there. But even in his absence, we will continue to stand firm on the foundations he created for us.
Papa is lovingly and deeply missed, but his legacy remains structurally sound in each and every one of us.
And as long as we remain bound together in love, just as he taught us, a part of Papa will always remain with us.
