Hildeberto Carreiro Obituary

Mr. Hildeberto Carreiro, beloved husband of Dionisia Carreiro, passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021 at the age of 77 years.

Hildeberto was born in Feteira Pequena Nordeste, Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal. Son to Rosa and Manuel Carreiro.  Back in Portugal he was a farmer and took up woodworking as a hobby.

In 1974, Hildeberto brought his woodworking skills to Vancouver, Canada, which became home to him and his family. With only a few dollars in his pocket he made a decision to move to Canada to better the future for his two sons.  Although proficient in carpentry unfortunately it was not a skill set that allowed him to provide for his family the way he wanted to. Hildeberto worked day and night and many weekends in reaching his goal to purchase his first family home where he raised his two sons to be as hard working as he was.

Hildeberto loved spending time with his family. On many occasions his sons would get a phone call on a Friday evening and asking if he wanted to go fishing.  He loved fishing. His sons would always say yes, and so he would head out with his sons at 5am on a Saturday morning and meet up at the boat launch. He always had to be the first on the water - As the saying goes; the early bird truly does catch the fish.

Hildeberto became very sick in 2018 with an aggressive form of cancer.  He battled this horrible decease for almost 3-years with the hope and faith of winning at the end. He fought it courageously. Being the utmost family man; even in his final days he was consoling every single member of his family and, as always, providing them with his words of profound wisdom.  Hildeberto took so much pride in helping raise his grandchildren.  They were his pride and joy!

Rob and Rick: We will be doing our part to help fight cancer in honour of our dad, and those before him that have lost the battle. As a family (9 of us!), we will be participating and rallying together in unity in a 200km+ bike ride over 2 days later in the year to continue to raise awareness and funding to help find a cure for cancer. We have witnessed first-hand the destruction cancer caused to our dad physically and emotionally, and the pain it continues to cause with him being taken away from us. Please support us. Our wish was always that dad would be at the finish line to watch us and cheer us on as he always was our number one fan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation in Memory of Hildeberto Carreiro.

Besides his loving wife Dionisia, Hildeberto is survived by his sons Rob (Lilia) and Rick (Marcia), grandchildren Trevor, Kiana, Kelsy, Kody and Jenaya. He was predeceased by his brother Tiberio in 2017 and leaves to mourn his sister-in-law Tina, and brother Manuel (Evelina).
