Artur Gelles Obituary

Mr. Artur Gelles Artur Gelles, better known as Art, passed away on August 11, 2014 at the untimely age of 62 doing what he loved best – cycling. During his time with us, Art accomplished more than most do in a lifetime, and inspired his family and friends to follow his example and live life to the fullest. Art was born in Caracas, Venezuela on June 16, 1952 to Edgar and Delia Gelles. In his early youth, he moved to Quebec to complete a bachelor’s degree at Bishop’s University. He later returned to Canada to do a Marketing MBA at McGill. Upon graduating he started his first job, at Colgate, Venezuela, where he met his wife of nearly thirty years, Alex. Together they had two incredible children: David and Alexa. During his working years, Art worked as Marketing Director for Colgate; as Managing Director for Kellogg’s; and as General Director for Wendy’s Venezuela. After 36 years of continuous work, he retired and moved to Vancouver, fulfilling his dream of living in Canada. He spent his final years indulging in life’s small pleasures, including listening to music, reading and of course, cycling. He especially enjoyed riding his bike in Vancouver and Squamish; spending the winters skiing in Whistler; and having a glass of chilled beer by the lake in Kelowna. He passed away touring his bike in Jasper, a place he admired for its beauty. Art accomplished a lot of his dreams, and will look over his family and friends as they accomplish their dreams, especially the ones he had for them. He was a truly kind man – compassionate, generous, affable and jovial – and had countless friends all over the world. He was a loving husband, the perfect complement to his spouse. He encouraged her to discover new places, enjoy music, to step outside her comfort zone, try new things, and to enjoy the outdoors. Above all, Art was a model father. He always provided his children with support and guidance while allowing them to learn from their mistakes. He accepted and loved his kids just as they were and encouraged them to work hard. He made sure they were given the best opportunities in life. Not many people are lucky enough to have had such an amazing dad, and his legacy will live on through his kids, who he inspired to enjoy life – to laugh and smile, and to remember not to take things too seriously. Art’s message was simple: live life to its fullest, dream big, and don’t be afraid to take risks. He will be missed and always remembered by his beloved family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 AT ST. MARKS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5935 Iona Drive, Vancouver, British Columbia, with Father Michael Stogre, celebrant.
