Agnes Dyck Obituary

Agnes Cecilia DYCK of Hope BC, wife of Irvin Dyck (predeceased in 2008) and mother of Karla Graham and Cheryl Sewell, passed away on March 17, 2023 at the age of 90 years. Agnes was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan on February 14, 1933 - Valentine’s Day - and she died on St. Patrick’s Day. This memory will always make us smile.

Agnes was a hard worker and started carrying responsibility at a young age with many chores on the family farm. She was the sixth child of nine siblings and the last of her siblings to pass.

Agnes trained as a licensed practical nurse and worked in Saskatchewan and Alberta before venturing to Chilliwack, BC. Here she met Irv and they married in 1959. They lived in Chilliwack for a few years before settling in Hope in late 1963. They built three houses on Hazel Street and enjoyed living by the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers, affectionately known as “grandma’s river”.

Agnes was actively involved with the Fraser Canyon Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Hope Rotary Club, and volunteered to fund raise for many other charities. Her real passion was her garden where she spent many hours each day carefully tending to her vegetables, flowers and fruit trees. She often had excess fresh fruits and vegetables, which she happily shared with family, neighbours and friends. Agnes was also pleased to share her broad knowledge of gardening with anyone who would stop by to chat. Agnes was an amazing cook and baker, using fresh ingredients from her garden.

Agnes was also talented at sewing, quilting, crocheting, and knit beautiful sweaters, blankets and many, many pairs of socks. When taking some down time, she loved to put her feet up in her sunroom and bask in the sun’s warmth with a cup of tea and a book.

Agnes is survived by her two daughters, Karla (Ken) and granddaughter, Courtney, and Cheryl (Bill) and granddaughter, Simone.

At Agnes’ request, no service will be held. The family plans to host an open house at Agnes’ home on Saturday, April 22.

Many thanks to the staff at the Fraser Hope Lodge and a very special thanks to Sharon Barber, who cared so wonderfully for mom when we couldn’t be there.

“You gave me a drawer in your kitchen

You gave me the room with a view of the yard

Whatever the hurt, you knew right where to kiss it

You gave me the best of your heart.

And you carried my rocks in your pocket

Flowers and feathers and butterfly wings

You had an answer for all of my questions

You showed me wonderful things.

I know that it hasn't been easy

I hope that I love like you do

'Cause I know that this world would be better

If everyone had a mother like you”.
