Douglas Hopgood Obituary

Doug died peacefully Thursday November 22nd, after nearly 99 years resident in Vancouver.  He was a truly gentle, genuine and giving soul; a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Pre-deceased by his wife of 66 years, Margo Jenny Hopgood née Affleck, together they raised their loving daughter, Susan, and involved themselves in the local community, always welcoming neighbours and friends alike.  Doug fought overseas in WWII with the Royal Canadian Air Force where he received commendation for his efforts.  Upon returning to Canada he attended McGill University in Montreal, graduating in dentistry.  He practiced in Vancouver for over 30 years, celebrated by his peers, and accepted leadership roles within the BC Dental Association. In retirement Doug forever busied himself with his love of golf, fishing, bridge while dancing at every opportunity!

More than his many achievements, he was the most lovely, open and generous person one could hope to meet.  He loved his family deeply and gave his time, energy and humour to all of their endeavours.  Whether it was getting out there with a hockey or lacrosse stick and playing in the back lane, or celebrating one of his grandkids learning to tie their shoe laces, he was always there, smiling and dedicated to his family.  We were all so very fortunate to have had you in our lives.

Doug is survived by his loving daughter Susan (David), grandson Ian (Sara), granddaughter Allison (Guy) and 2 great grandchildren Elliot and Maggie.

The family extend their warmest thanks to Blenheim Lodge for their care, kindness and attention over the past several years and, in particular, to Mak from ABC Home Support.

"The value of things is not measured on the time they last, but the intensity with which they occur.  That's why there are unforgettable moments, inexplicable things and incomparable people."  - Fernando Pessoa
